Amole Gupte
Biography
Amole Gupte is an acclaimed Indian screenwriter, actor, director, singer, and child activist, best known for his creative vision and contributions to meaningful cinema.
Born in 1962 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gupte began his career in theatre and gradually moved into films, where he established himself as a multifaceted talent. He gained widespread recognition as the creative director and screenwriter of Taare Zameen Par (2007), a film that sensitively portrayed the struggles of a dyslexic child and reshaped conversations around education and parenting in India. Alongside his wife, filmmaker Deepa Bhatia, he conceived the film’s concept, research, and editing, earning immense respect for his storytelling rooted in social issues.
As a director, Gupte made his debut with Stanley Ka Dabba (2011), followed by films like Hawa Hawaai (2014), Sniff (2017), and Saina (2021), each reflecting his commitment to children’s perspectives and human resilience. His acting career spans decades, with appearances in films such as Holi (1984), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992), Kaminey (2009), and Phas Gaye Re Obama (2010), where his performances showcased his versatility. Beyond cinema, he served as the Chairperson of the Children’s Film Society, India (2012–2015) and continues to support young filmmakers as a member of the advisory board of the Kautik International Student Film Festival.
Married to Deepa Bhatia, he is the father of actor Partho Gupte, who starred in Stanley Ka Dabba. With a career spanning writing, directing, acting, and activism, Amole Gupte remains one of India’s most respected creative voices, admired for his ability to blend entertainment with social consciousness.
