A heartwarming video has gone viral on social media, capturing the emotional moment Shreyas Iyer’s father celebrated his son’s appointment as India’s new T20 captain . Surrounded by family, Santosh Iyer was seen dancing with pure joy after the announcement—a stark contrast to his frustration just last year.
The Emotional Video
The clip, shared widely across social media platforms, shows Santosh Iyer unable to contain his pride. For a father who once dreamed of his son becoming a famous cricketera journey captured in a documentary titled Shreyas Iyer — A Father’s Dream—this moment marks the culmination of years of support and sacrifice .
The Captaincy Announcement
Shreyas Iyer was appointed India’s T20 captain over the weekend, replacing Suryakumar Yadav in the role. The Mumbai batter will lead the Men in Blue in the shortest format starting with a two-match T20I series against Ireland on June 26, followed by a five-match tour of England beginning July 1 .
Reacting to his new role, Iyer said: “I’ve got this job right now of responsibility as a captain, it’s a great challenge. At the same time, I don’t have to change my personality. I have to be the same person how I was before and not try to be someone else or be under someone’s shadow” .
A Dramatic Turnaround
The celebration comes just months after Santosh Iyer had publicly expressed disappointment over his son’s exclusion from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad. At that time, despite Iyer leading Punjab Kings to the IPL final and scoring 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07, the selectors had overlooked him .
“I don’t know what else Shreyas has to do to make it to the Indian T20 team,” Santosh had told the Times of India in August 2025. “I’m not saying make him the Indian captain, but at least select him in the team” .
Even then, he had noted his son’s calm demeanor: “Even if he’s left out, he never shows dissent. He’ll simply say, ‘Mera naseeb hai’ (It’s my luck). He is always cool and calm” .
Now, fate has given a different answer—and a father couldn’t be prouder.
