Piaggio to Launch India-Made Commuter Scooter Range in 2027 to Rival Honda Activa

Italian two-wheeler manufacturer Piaggio has confirmed plans to enter India's highly competitive commuter scooter segment with an all-new, India-developed scooter range scheduled for launch in the first half of 2027. The upcoming lineup will mark a significant expansion beyond the company's premium Vespa and Aprilia offerings, targeting mass-market buyers with locally designed and manufactured products.

New India-Specific Scooter Platform

Piaggio is developing a completely new platform specifically for Indian customers. Rather than introducing a single model, the company plans to launch multiple scooters built on this architecture, each catering to different customer needs through varying features and specifications.

According to Piaggio Vehicles' Chairman and Managing Director Diego Graffi, the project is progressing rapidly and represents a strategic shift toward competing in India's largest scooter category.

To Rival Honda Activa and TVS Jupiter

The new commuter scooter range is expected to compete directly with some of India's best-selling models, including:

Honda Activa
TVS Jupiter
Suzuki Access
Hero Xoom
Yamaha Fascino

Unlike Vespa scooters, which are positioned in the premium segment, the upcoming lineup will be aimed at the high-volume commuter market, where affordability, fuel efficiency, and practicality are key purchase factors.

Multiple Powertrain Options Expected

Piaggio has indicated that it will adopt a fuel-agnostic approach for the new scooter family. This means the platform could support multiple powertrain options, including petrol and potentially electrified versions in the future, depending on market demand and regulations. However, the company has not yet confirmed the final engine specifications.

Made in India, Designed for India

A major highlight of the upcoming range is that it will be designed and engineered in India rather than being adapted from an existing global product. Production is expected to take place at Piaggio's Baramati manufacturing facility in Maharashtra, which already produces Vespa and Aprilia scooters and has sufficient capacity for the new lineup.

While the scooters are initially intended for Indian customers, Piaggio has hinted that export opportunities to international markets could also be explored in the future.

A Strategic Move for Piaggio

The launch represents Piaggio's biggest push into India's mainstream scooter market. The company has acknowledged that its premium positioning limited volumes in the past and now aims to strengthen its presence in the country's nearly 6-million-unit annual scooter market with competitively positioned products while retaining a touch of Piaggio's premium design philosophy.

If successful, the new commuter scooter range could significantly expand Piaggio's footprint in India and provide buyers with another strong alternative in one of the world's largest two-wheeler markets.
