Story

Straight (2009), directed by Parvati Balagopalan, follows Pinu Patel (Vinay Pathak), the owner of a successful Indian restaurant in London. Despite his financial success, Pinu is plagued by insecurities—he is a virgin, socially awkward, and terrified of being laughed at. His introverted nature leaves him isolated, with no real friends.

Things begin to change when Cameron (Anuj Chaudhary), a charming young man, joins his restaurant staff, and Renu (Gul Panag), a spirited graphic designer, enters his life. A quirky love triangle develops, forcing Pinu to confront his fears and confusion about intimacy and identity.

The film humorously explores Pinu’s journey as he questions whether he might be gay, while also realizing his growing affection for Renu. Through awkward encounters, comic situations, and heartfelt moments, Pinu learns that love is not about labels but about acceptance and courage.

By the end, Pinu sheds his complexes, embraces his feelings for Renu, and discovers that being “straight” in life is less about orientation and more about honesty with oneself.

After being rejected by his bride-to-be, Pinu begins questioning his sexuality.
