Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan has admitted to being frustrated that as a result of this, filmmakers have put him in many films and roles of the “good guy” (or “good guy” as he has been so wrongfully called it) in very many.
While he has had a diverse array of genres, the actor feels that the industry is still not giving him dark, more complex character roles that would challenge his artistry and that he is not ready to play a “good guy” (and he has no good actor/actress to play as such, with the biggest part of the role as in the film industry).
Hrithik said he appreciates that he has earned such a lot of love and recognition for his heroics but he is ready to break out of the box. People are looking for him to do roles where he does very morally complex roles, but the scope for that is limited. His comments are part of a larger problem in Bollywood where typecasting often prevents actors from going beyond their established image.
In films like Guzaarish and Kaabil, the actor has shown a very good depth of character in which he portrayed layered characters with empathy and vulnerability. But he says this is rare compared to the more than one billion movies that have made him part of a happy-go-lucky and righteous protagonist. Hrithik insists he is fascinated with stories that will push boundaries and allow him to portray someone as flawed, conflicted.
Hrithik’s desire to take on darker roles may mark a turning point in his career. With Bollywood increasingly embracing unconventional storytelling and complex character arcs, filmmakers may soon recognize the potential of casting him in roles that defy expectations. His star power combined with nuanced performances could create memorable cinematic experiences.
Hrithik’s remarks also illuminate the challenges that established actors face in reinventing themselves. Though newcomers can often experiment with different roles, veterans tend to struggle to break free from the images that audiences and filmmakers have constructed around them. Hrithik’s openness about this struggle shows his eagerness to grow as an artist.
The fact that even Bollywood’s biggest stars have to be creative is a reminder that the person who can’t have freedom of expression, if you ever have one, is not just someone who is the best actor but someone who is the best actor himself. He could also be Bollywood’s next typecast.
