Speaking to Zoom, Kumar Sanu reflected on the kind of music that was being produced during the 1990s. While the decade is remembered for some of Bollywood's most enduring romantic melodies, it also produced songs that have since been criticised for their suggestive or vulgar lyrics. Sanu said that maintaining certain artistic principles was important to him and that he deliberately tried to stay away from such songs.

The singer explained that one of his personal principles was not to bring vulgarity into his songs. However, he acknowledged that professional pressure sometimes became difficult to resist. According to Sanu, there were one or two instances when he felt compelled to sing songs he otherwise would have rejected because he feared that refusing could affect his career.

Sanu also referred to what he described as the “movie mafia” while discussing the pressure he experienced. He said that refusing certain songs may have cost him professionally, but he remains comfortable with the choices he made throughout his career. He specifically mentioned the song “Raj Gaya Tabla Tabele Mein” as one of the tracks that fell into the category he generally tried to avoid.

The singer's comments also highlight the difficult choices playback singers sometimes faced in an industry where music was closely linked to a film's commercial prospects. During the 1990s, playback singers were expected to record songs across a wide range of genres, and refusing a particular track could potentially affect professional relationships with producers, composers and filmmakers.

Despite the occasional exception, Sanu maintained that he largely remained committed to his principles. He said that he had suffered losses because of his decisions but did not regret maintaining his position. His comments offer a glimpse into the professional pressures that existed behind the music industry during one of Bollywood's most commercially successful eras.

Kumar Sanu rose to extraordinary popularity following the success of Aashiqui and subsequently became associated with some of the biggest romantic songs of the 1990s. His memorable tracks include “Mera Dil Bhi Kitna Pagal Hai,” “Tum Mile Dil Khile,” “Ab Tere Bin,” “Do Dil Mil Rahe Hain” and “Aankh Hai Bhari Bhari.” His voice became synonymous with the romantic sound of the era.

His latest revelations have sparked renewed discussion about the changing nature of Bollywood music and the pressures faced by singers during the industry's earlier decades. While Sanu admitted to recording a small number of songs under pressure, he emphasised that avoiding vulgarity remained a principle he followed throughout most of his career.

The singer's candid comments have given fans another perspective on the 1990s music industry, showing that behind some of Bollywood's biggest hits were difficult professional decisions and pressures that audiences rarely saw.
