Janhvi Kapoor, who is currently basking in the spotlight ahead of the release of her much-anticipated Telugu film Peddi, has ignited a thoughtful debate on the contrasting work cultures of Bollywood and Tollywood. The actress, in a recent interview, offered a candid comparison between her experiences in the North and South Indian film industries.
Reflecting on her time working on the sets of Peddi and her previous Telugu outing, Janhvi observed a fundamental difference in approach. She noted that Telugu cinema is driven by an overwhelming sense of passion and pride, whereas Hindi cinema tends to function like a meticulously maintained Excel sheet.
"I think there’s a lot of passion and pride that one takes in a South film set," Janhvi said. "It’s not so much about making a project and it’s not so much about hitting certain timelines. It’s more about creating cinema, however much time that takes, even if it relies on the spontaneity of the director or several other variables."
The actress went on to elaborate on the Bollywood style of functioning, which she described as far more organized but potentially restrictive. She acknowledged the efficiency of the "Excel sheet" approach but also pointed out its downsides.
"I think in Hindi cinema, that Excel sheet matters a lot more. So you’re a lot more by the book and I’d say maybe a little organised, sometimes even to a point of fault because then there are creative compromises," Janhvi stated. However, she was careful to add a balanced perspective, noting, "But there are also benefits to being that organised and stringent."
Janhvi's comments have quickly gone viral, sparking mixed reactions across social media. While many Tollywood fans applauded her for recognizing the "pure cinema" culture of the South, some Bollywood insiders argued that organization and discipline do not necessarily kill creativity. Others pointed out that the "spontaneity" she praises in Telugu cinema is possible only because of the massive budgets and extended schedules that South producers are willing to grant.
With Peddi directed by Buchi Babu Sana and co-starring Ram Charan, Janhvi is currently experiencing the very passion she speaks of. The film is slated for a worldwide release on June 4, 2026.
