Rajinikanth's Thalaivar 173: Ashwath Marimuthu Confirmed as Director? Set Construction Begins in Poonamallee

Chennai: Superstar Rajinikanth's highly anticipated 173rd film, tentatively titled Thalaivar 173, is finally gathering momentum. Set construction for the project is currently underway in Poonamallee, a suburb of Chennai, with shooting expected to commence once the elaborate set work is completed.

The project carries immense historical significance as it marks the first time in over three decades that Tamil cinema's two biggest icons Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, are collaborating on a film, with Haasan producing under his Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI) banner.

The Director's Chair: Ashwath Marimuthu Takes Over

After months of speculation and multiple changes at the helm, all signs now point to Ashwath Marimuthu directing Thalaivar 173.  The filmmaker, best known for the critically acclaimed Oh My Kadavule and the recent blockbuster Dragon, has reportedly been brought on board after two previous directors exited the project.

The journey to finalise a director has been tumultuous. Sundar C was initially announced as the director but backed out, citing that the "pressure was overwhelming."  He was replaced by Cibi Chakravarthi (of Don fame), and a first look was even released earlier this year. However, with no further updates, speculation grew that he too had exited.

The buzz around Ashwath intensified dramatically when RKFI shared a stylish birthday video for the director on June 2. While the production house did not directly mention Thalaivar 173, fans interpreted the gesture as a strong indication of his involvement.

A Script Rajinikanth Once Called "Extraordinary"

Interestingly, Ashwath is no stranger to the Superstar. He had previously narrated a script to Rajinikanth, which the actor loved so much that he reportedly "forgot to have lunch" during the narration. Rajinikanth called the script "extraordinary" and even discussed casting for the villain role. While that project did not materialise at the time, it appears that the script or a variation of it has now been revived for Thalaivar 173.

Production Timeline

With set work now progressing steadily in Poonamallee, the team is aiming to begin shooting soon.  The film is widely expected to hit the big screens for Pongal 2027, positioning it as one of the biggest festive releases in Tamil cinema.

While an official confirmation from RKFI regarding Ashwath's appointment is still awaited, the wheels of production are visibly in motion, signalling that this landmark collaboration between Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan is finally ready to take off.
