Mohanlal Receives Dadasaheb Phalke Award: A Historic Honor for Malayalam Cinema

In a landmark moment for Indian cinema, legendary actor Mohanlal was conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 71st National Film Awards held on September 23, 2025, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The award, presented by President Droupadi Murmu, recognizes Mohanlal’s extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema over a career spanning more than four decades.

Fondly known as “Lalettan” by fans across Kerala and beyond, Mohanlal has acted in over 360 films across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. His versatility and depth have made him one of the most respected and beloved figures in Indian film. From iconic roles in Vanaprastham, Bharatham, and Drishyam, to his acclaimed performance in the Sanskrit play Karnabharam, Mohanlal has consistently pushed artistic boundaries.

In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Mohanlal said, “Cinema is the heartbeat of my soul,” dedicating the award to the entire Malayalam film industry. He acknowledged the influence of legendary filmmakers and expressed gratitude to audiences who have supported his journey. Quoting Kumaranasan’s Veenapoovu, he reflected on the beauty and fragility of life and art.

This marks only the second time a Malayali artist has received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the first being director Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The recognition is not just a personal triumph for Mohanlal, but a proud moment for Kerala and Malayalam cinema as a whole. As tributes poured in from across the country—including messages from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and fellow actor Mammootty—the celebration of Mohanlal’s legacy became a national event
