Thug Life Set for Release in Karnataka After Supreme Court Ruling

The much-anticipated Tamil film Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Mani Ratnam, is finally set to release in Karnataka after the Supreme Court intervened to lift an unofficial ban. The film, which premiered worldwide on June 5, 2025, faced hurdles in Karnataka due to controversy surrounding Kamal Haasan’s remarks on the Kannada language.

Legal Battle & Supreme Court Verdict
The film’s release was initially blocked after pro-Kannada groups protested against Haasan’s statement that Kannada was born out of Tamil. The Karnataka Film Chambers of Commerce (KFCC) had announced a ban, citing concerns over potential unrest. However, a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed, arguing that the ban was extra-judicial and violated freedom of speech.

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the film’s release, stating that mob threats cannot dictate cinema screenings. Justice Ujjal Bhuyan emphasized that rule of law must prevail, ensuring that any CBFC-certified film can be screened without fear.

Security Measures & Screening Plans
Following the court’s decision, the Karnataka government has been directed to ensure safe screenings across the state. Police protection will be provided to theaters showing Thug Life, preventing any disruptions.

The film will now be available in multiplexes and single-screen theaters, with advance bookings reopening soon. The OTT release is also confirmed, with Thug Life set to stream on Netflix after its theatrical run.

With the legal hurdles cleared, Thug Life is finally making its way to Karnataka theaters, allowing fans to experience the Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam collaboration on the big screen. The ruling sets a precedent for artistic freedom, ensuring that films are judged on their merit rather than political controversies.
