SBI Cash Withdrawal Charges From October 1: ₹15 Plus GST After 4 Free Withdrawals

The State Bank of India (SBI) is set to revise its charges for cash withdrawals from savings bank accounts, with customers facing an additional fee for transactions beyond the existing monthly free limit. The new charge will apply from October 1, making it important for SBI customers to keep track of their cash withdrawal activity.

Under the revised structure, SBI customers will be charged ₹15 plus applicable Goods and Services Tax (GST) for cash withdrawals made beyond the existing four free withdrawals per month. The move is expected to encourage customers to rely more on digital payment methods and manage cash transactions within the prescribed free limit.

SBI Cash Withdrawal Rules

Savings account customers generally receive a specified number of free cash withdrawals each month, depending on the applicable account and transaction channel. Once the free limit is exhausted, additional cash withdrawals can attract service charges.

The ₹15 charge mentioned in the revised rule is exclusive of GST. Therefore, the actual amount deducted from a customer's account will be higher after applicable taxes are added.

Customers who regularly withdraw cash multiple times a month may therefore notice an increase in their banking costs from October. Those who usually make fewer than four cash withdrawals will not be affected by the additional charge under this particular provision.

Why Customers Should Pay Attention

The new rule highlights the importance of understanding banking service charges before making frequent cash transactions. Customers who make several small withdrawals could potentially reduce their additional costs by planning withdrawals more efficiently.

For example, instead of making multiple withdrawals throughout the month, customers may choose to withdraw an appropriate amount within the free transaction limit, provided it is safe and practical for their needs.

The change also comes as banks continue to promote digital transactions. UPI, internet banking, debit cards and other electronic payment methods have reduced the need for customers to carry large amounts of physical cash.

Digital Payments Could Gain Further Importance

India has witnessed rapid growth in digital payments in recent years, with UPI becoming a major method for everyday transactions. Banking customers increasingly use smartphones and digital payment platforms for shopping, bill payments, money transfers and other expenses.

Charges on additional cash withdrawals could further encourage customers to use digital alternatives where available. However, cash remains important for many households, small businesses and customers in areas where digital payment infrastructure may not always be convenient.

SBI customers should check the latest official schedule of charges applicable to their specific account and withdrawal method, as fees and free limits can vary by account type and transaction channel.

The October 1 change means customers should plan their cash withdrawals carefully and monitor the number of transactions they make each month to avoid unexpected service charges.
