Instagram Cracks Down on AI Influencers Posing as Real Humans; New Label Rules Explained

Instagram is tightening its rules around AI-generated influencers and virtual personas, making it harder for computer-generated characters to present themselves as real people without disclosure. The Meta-owned platform has replaced its earlier “AI creator” label with a clearer “AI-generated profile” designation.

New AI-Generated Profile Label

Under the updated system, Instagram wants users to know when the person featured on a profile is entirely or substantially created using artificial intelligence. The platform said the change follows feedback from users who discovered that profiles appearing to belong to real people were actually built around AI-generated personalities.

The new AI-generated profile label is intended to remove confusion surrounding the identity of these accounts. The disclosure can appear on the profile and alongside associated content, helping users distinguish synthetic personalities from genuine human influencers.

Unlabelled AI Influencers Could Lose Reach

Instagram is also introducing a significant consequence for accounts that fail to disclose their AI-generated identity. Profiles featuring AI-generated people that do not use the appropriate label may have their reach restricted, including reduced visibility in recommendations.

That could affect how easily such accounts appear to users who do not already follow them, including through recommendation surfaces such as Reels and Explore. Creators who proactively apply the correct label will not be penalised simply because their profile features an AI-generated person.

Not Every Use of AI Requires the Label

Instagram's new rule does not mean that every creator using artificial intelligence must identify their account as an AI-generated profile.

The label specifically targets profiles where the person or persona itself is generated by AI. Human creators who use AI for tasks such as editing photographs, improving captions, designing graphics or making other creative changes are not automatically required to use the profile label.

This distinction is important because AI-assisted content creation has become increasingly common among traditional influencers and social-media creators.

Why Instagram Is Making the Change

The move comes as AI influencers become increasingly sophisticated and capable of building large audiences. Some synthetic personalities now post lifestyle photographs, interact with followers and promote products in ways that can make them difficult to distinguish from human creators.

Instagram's updated approach is therefore focused on transparency and user trust. The company says people should be able to understand when they are interacting with an AI-generated person rather than a real individual.

Creators whose accounts are incorrectly flagged can review their account status and, where applicable, appeal the decision.

The new policy signals a broader shift across social media: as AI-generated personalities become increasingly realistic, platforms are moving toward clearer disclosure rules to prevent users from being misled.
