India has announced a one-day national mourning to honor the passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar and father of the current ruler, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The decision reflects the deep diplomatic ties between India and Qatar and recognizes Sheikh Hamad's significant contribution to strengthening bilateral relations over the years. The national mourning will be observed on July 13, with the Indian national flag flown at half-mast across all government buildings where it is regularly displayed. Official entertainment programs will also remain suspended for the day.
Sheikh Hamad passed away at the age of 74 on July 12. Widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, he served as the country's Emir from 1995 to 2013. During his 18-year reign, Qatar underwent remarkable economic growth fueled by its vast natural gas reserves, while also emerging as a key diplomatic and economic player on the global stage. He voluntarily handed over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim, in 2013, ensuring a smooth leadership transition.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over Sheikh Hamad's demise, describing him as a "visionary leader" who transformed Qatar into a prosperous and influential nation. In his condolence message, the Prime Minister also referred to Sheikh Hamad as a true friend of India whose leadership played an important role in strengthening the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that India decided to observe national mourning in recognition of Sheikh Hamad's exceptional contribution to India-Qatar relations and his consistent support for the large Indian community living in Qatar. Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju is expected to visit Doha to convey condolences on behalf of the Government of India.
India and Qatar share close strategic and economic ties. Qatar has long been one of India's most important energy partners, supplying a substantial portion of the country's liquefied natural gas (LNG) requirements. Additionally, more than 800,000 Indians live and work in Qatar, making them one of the largest expatriate communities in the Gulf nation. Bilateral trade between the two countries has continued to expand across sectors including energy, infrastructure, investment, education, and technology.
