India Launches E85 Ethanol Fuel on World Environment Day

India marked World Environment Day with a significant step toward sustainable mobility by launching E85 ethanol fuel at select stations across Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. The rollout, managed by Indian Oil, BPCL, and HPCL, covers 50 to 100 outlets initially, with plans to expand to 500 stations nationwide by the end of 2026.

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri emphasized that E85 is substantially cheaper for flex-fuel vehicles, which are designed to run on high ethanol blends. He noted that such vehicles can reduce particulate matter emissions to near zero, making them a cleaner alternative to conventional petrol.

The launch follows recent industry developments, including Hero MotoCorp’s E85-compatible motorcycles and Maruti Suzuki’s Wagon R Flex Fuel car, both designed to support India’s ethanol transition. These innovations align with the government’s broader goals of boosting farmer incomes through ethanol production, reducing dependence on oil imports, and achieving 20% ethanol blending ahead of schedule.

While the benefits are clear, challenges remain. Older vehicles not designed for ethanol blends face risks of corrosion and engine damage. To address this, officials are encouraging retrofit solutions and exploring schemes to replace highly polluting trucks with cleaner alternatives.

The introduction of E85 also reflects India’s commitment to diversifying its energy mix. By leveraging ethanol derived from crops such as sugarcane and maize, the country aims to create a sustainable fuel ecosystem that benefits both the environment and rural economies.

Industry experts believe that widespread adoption of E85 will depend on consumer awareness, vehicle compatibility, and infrastructure expansion. With major automakers already stepping in, the transition appears promising.

As India accelerates its clean energy initiatives, the launch of E85 fuel stands as a milestone in the journey toward greener transportation. It not only supports climate goals but also strengthens the link between agriculture and energy, offering a holistic approach to sustainable development.
