Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are reportedly considering another mobile tariff hike of around 15%, a move that could increase the cost of keeping active mobile connections for millions of users across India.
The possible tariff increase comes as telecom companies continue efforts to improve average revenue per user (ARPU) and strengthen financial performance. Industry analysts expect operators to focus on increasing recharge prices while encouraging customers to shift toward higher-value plans offering more data and services.
For many users, even basic mobile connectivity costs have increased significantly over the past decade. Airtel’s minimum recharge required to keep services active and receive SMS-based OTPs is currently much higher than it was years ago. Reports indicate that the company’s lowest such plan has risen to around ₹349, compared with a ₹10 recharge option available in 2014.
The increase has raised concerns among users who maintain secondary SIM cards primarily for receiving banking OTPs, authentication messages, and emergency communication. A higher minimum recharge requirement could make it more expensive for customers who do not regularly use mobile data or voice services but need to keep their numbers active.
India’s telecom sector has undergone major changes since the entry of Reliance Jio in 2016, which triggered intense price competition and significantly reduced mobile data costs. Over time, operators have increased tariffs to improve profitability after years of low pricing in the industry.
Both Jio and Airtel have invested heavily in expanding 5G networks, improving infrastructure, and upgrading services. Telecom companies argue that sustainable pricing is necessary to support continued investment in network quality and technological development.
However, consumer groups have expressed concerns that repeated tariff increases may place additional financial pressure on budget-conscious users, particularly those who rely on mobile connections for essential services such as digital payments, online banking, and government-related communications.
The telecom industry has been moving toward a model where customers are encouraged to use bundled plans that include data, calling, and digital services. As smartphone usage and online services continue to grow, mobile connectivity has become increasingly important for everyday activities.
If implemented, the reported 15% tariff hike would mark another significant adjustment in India’s telecom pricing landscape. Users are expected to closely monitor announcements from Jio and Airtel regarding revised plans and effective dates.
The companies have not yet officially confirmed the reported tariff increase, and further details will likely emerge after formal announcements from the telecom operators.
