Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Opens: Travel Time Reduced to 45 Minutes with Barrierless Tolling

Travel between Lucknow and Kanpur has become significantly faster with the inauguration of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway (National Expressway-6), a major infrastructure project developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Opened on July 13, the six-lane expressway is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities from over an hour to approximately 45 minutes under normal traffic conditions.

The expressway was inaugurated by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Built at an estimated cost of ₹4,700 crore, the project is designed to improve connectivity, reduce congestion on existing highways, and support economic growth in the region.

One of the biggest highlights of the expressway is the introduction of India's first barrierless toll collection system. Instead of conventional toll plazas, the highway uses FASTag technology along with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to facilitate seamless toll collection. The system aims to minimize traffic delays and improve the overall travel experience for commuters.

The expressway is also equipped with several advanced safety features. According to NHAI, it has 63 surveillance cameras, emergency call boxes, AI-powered speed enforcement systems, and intelligent traffic monitoring. Vehicles can travel at speeds of up to 120 kmph, making it one of the country's fastest and most technologically advanced highways.

Officials believe the new corridor will strengthen connectivity not only between Lucknow and Kanpur but also with Delhi and other parts of the National Capital Region through the expanding expressway network. Improved logistics and reduced travel time are also expected to benefit businesses, industries, and daily commuters.

However, the project has also attracted criticism. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav questioned reports of repairs being carried out before the official inauguration and raised concerns over the toll charges. The current toll for cars has been reported at ₹275 for a one-way journey, prompting debate over affordability for regular commuters.

In response, NHAI stated that the reported issues were minor, addressed before the opening, and do not affect the overall quality or safety of the expressway.

Despite the criticism, the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway marks another major milestone in India's expanding highway infrastructure. With faster travel, modern technology, and enhanced safety measures, the project is expected to transform road connectivity in Uttar Pradesh and provide a smoother commuting experience for thousands of travelers every day.
