India’s medical entrance exam NEET-UG is set for a high-security retest on June 21, 2026, after the original May 3 exam was cancelled due to a paper leak in Rajasthan. To ensure smooth execution, authorities conducted nationwide mock drills on June 20, impacting over 22 lakh candidates across the country.

The government has rolled out extraordinary arrangements to safeguard the integrity of the exam. IAF Mi-17 helicopters are airlifting question papers to remote areas, while 15,000 paramilitary personnel have been deployed for on-ground security. In addition, drones are being used for aerial monitoring, and social media platforms are under surveillance to prevent leaks or malpractice. With 5,500 centers across 551 cities, this has become one of the largest coordinated exam operations in India’s history.

Public reactions to the measures have been mixed. Supporters praise the elaborate setup as a necessary step to restore credibility after the scandal, while critics mock the scale of the arrangements, questioning whether militarized operations are sustainable for academic examinations.

Amid the heightened security, reports indicate that at least 12 students have died by suicide since the cancellation, underscoring the immense pressure faced by aspirants. Families and activists have voiced concerns about systemic failures, arguing that the burden of corruption and mismanagement has fallen unfairly on young candidates.

The NEET-UG re-exam has become more than a test of academic merit—it is now a test of India’s ability to uphold fairness and transparency in education. With helicopters, drones, and paramilitary forces in play, the government hopes to deliver a glitch-free process. Yet, the tragedy of student lives lost remains a sobering reminder of the stakes involved.
