Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged India's rapidly expanding private space industry to look beyond rockets and satellite launches and focus on developing technologies that can solve challenges on Earth. During a meeting with the CEOs and founders of 20 Indian space startups in New Delhi, Modi highlighted the potential of space technology in agriculture, livestock management, dairy, environmental protection and climate-related applications.

The interaction reflects the government's broader push to make India's private space ecosystem a major contributor to the country's economic and technological development. Modi praised young entrepreneurs for entering a demanding sector and taking risks at a time when India's space industry is undergoing significant transformation.

Space Technology for Agriculture

One of the key areas highlighted by the Prime Minister was agriculture. Satellite imagery, remote sensing, weather intelligence and data analytics can help farmers and policymakers make better decisions about crops, irrigation and soil management.

Modi encouraged space technology companies working in agriculture to collaborate with agricultural universities and government agencies. Such partnerships could help translate advanced satellite-based technologies into practical tools that farmers can use to improve productivity and respond to changing weather conditions.

Space-based data can also support livestock and dairy management by providing information useful for monitoring resources, weather patterns and environmental conditions.

Tackling Climate and Environmental Challenges

Climate change was another important area discussed during the meeting. India's space startups are developing technologies capable of generating detailed weather and climate intelligence, which could help governments and businesses prepare for extreme weather events.

Modi also called for greater cooperation between companies developing solutions for space debris and environmental organisations. Managing debris in Earth's orbit is becoming increasingly important as the number of satellites and commercial space missions grows.

The Prime Minister's message was clear: India's space capabilities should create benefits not only in orbit but also in people's everyday lives.

India’s Private Space Sector Expands

The meeting included representatives from prominent startups such as Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, Pixxel, Dhruva Space, GalaxEye, PierSight, Bellatrix Aerospace and Digantara. Their work spans launch vehicles, satellites, propulsion, Earth observation, space intelligence, weather technology and space-debris management.

India's private space ecosystem has expanded significantly since reforms opened greater opportunities for private participation. The Department of Space said in June that the country's private space ecosystem had grown to more than 400 startups.

Focus on Global Opportunities

Modi also stressed collaboration and innovation as India seeks to establish itself as a global space technology hub. The government sees private companies as important partners in developing indigenous capabilities and attracting investment.

The Prime Minister's call to apply space technology to agriculture, climate, environment and other real-world challenges could broaden the market for India's space startups. It also represents a shift from viewing space primarily as a launch and exploration sector toward treating it as an important technology platform for solving problems on Earth
