New Delhi: In a landmark decision set to ease international travel for millions, Germany has officially scrapped the airport transit visa requirement for Indian nationals. The change, published in Germany's Federal Law Gazette on June 2, 2026, takes effect from June 3, 2026 .
What This Means for Travelers
Starting tomorrow, Indian passport holders with layovers at German airports will no longer need a separate transit visa when traveling onward to a third country. The exemption applies to passengers remaining in the international transit area during layovers at German hubs such as Frankfurt and Munich .
Every year, a large number of Indians — including students, professionals, and tourists — travel through German airports en route to destinations across Europe, North America, and beyond .
Fulfilling a January Pledge
The move implements a key outcome of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit to India in January 2026 — his first trip to Asia as Chancellor . During that visit, India and Germany signed 19 pacts covering defense industrial cooperation, higher education, critical minerals, semiconductors, and the Indo-Pacific, alongside announcing the visa-free transit regime .
"The lifting of the so-called airport transit visa requirement for Indian citizens... implements a result of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz's trip to India in January of this year," the German Embassy in New Delhi stated. "It underlines the Federal Government's commitment to deepening German Indian relations, facilitating the movement of people, and further strengthening economic ties" .
Following France's Lead
Germany joins France in easing transit rules for Indians. In April 2026, France operationalized visa-free transit for Indian nationals transiting through its airports — a commitment made during President Emmanuel Macron's February 2026 visit to India .
What Travelers Should Know
While the transit visa requirement has been waived, travelers must still hold valid visas for their final destination countries. The
