Mumbai is experiencing extremely heavy rainfall, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a Red Alert for several areas in the city. The downpour, which began late Sunday, has led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, disrupting traffic and slowing down suburban train services. The IMD has warned that intense spells of rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds will continue throughout the day, with maximum wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph. Residents are advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated on weather alerts.
The worst-affected areas under the Red Alert include Borivali, Santacruz, Powai, Mulund, Chembur, Worli, Colaba, and Alibag. Meanwhile, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan are under an Orange Alert, indicating very heavy rainfall. The southwest monsoon, which arrived in Maharashtra 10 days earlier than usual, is advancing rapidly, contributing to the intense weather conditions. The IMD has predicted consistent rainfall throughout the week, raising concerns about flooding and urban disruptions.
Authorities have deployed disaster response teams, including NDRF personnel, to assist with emergencies. Commuters are facing delays in train services, and road traffic has slowed due to poor visibility and water accumulation. The IMD has urged residents to take precautions, as the heavy rainfall is expected to persist for the next few days. With the monsoon arriving earlier than expected, Mumbai is bracing for continued wet weather and possible infrastructure challenges
