Sankatahara Chaturthi December 2024: Date, Rituals, and Significance

Date: Sankatahara Chaturthi, also known as Sankashti Chaturthi, will be observed on December 18, 2024

Significance: Sankatahara Chaturthi is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The term "Sankatahara" means "remover of obstacles," and devotees worship Lord Ganesha to seek his blessings for removing obstacles and difficulties in their lives1. It is believed that by observing this fast and performing the rituals, one can achieve success, prosperity, and a trouble-free life.

Puja Procedure:

Preparation: Wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath. Clean the house and prepare an altar for Lord Ganesha.

Idol Setup: Place an idol or picture of Lord Ganesha on a wooden plank. Decorate the idol with fresh flowers and Durva grass.

Lighting: Light a diya with desi ghee in front of the idol and incense sticks.

Offerings: Offer yellow flowers, garlands, and sweets such as laddoos or modaks. Recite Bindayak Katha and chant Ganesha Aarti.

Fasting: Observe a strict fast from dawn to dusk. The diet usually includes fruits, raw vegetables, and Sabudana (tapioca).

Moon Viewing: In the evening, after sunset, view the moon (Chandrodaya) and offer prayers. Break the fast only after seeing the moon3.

Bhog Prasad: Offer bhog prasad and distribute it among family members. Conclude the fast by consuming sattvik food.
