Bangalore Karaga Festival 2024, Date, Time & Importance

The vibrant Bengaluru Karaga festival, one of the city’s oldest traditions, is set to be held from April 15th to 23rd, 2024. This nine-day annual celebration takes place at the Dharmarayaswamy Temple in Thigalarapet.

Karaga is deeply associated with the Thigala community and draws devotees from across the city. Its rich history dates back 300 years, making it a significant cultural event in Bengaluru. The festival revolves around the legendary character of Draupadi, the powerful and resilient heroine from the Indian epic Mahabharata.

Why Karaga? The festival commemorates Draupadi’s return to Earth after her celestial journey. Legend has it that she reappears during the festival to bless the city. Devotees believe that participating in Karaga brings prosperity and protection.

How is Karaga Celebrated? During the festival, a male priest dons the attire of a woman and carries a pyramid-shaped structure (karaga) adorned with flowers on his head. This ritual symbolizes Draupadi’s strength and resilience. The priest, known as the pieramidiga, refrains from touching anyone with his hands during the procession.

The Thigala community celebrates Karaga with fervor, dancing and chanting hymns. The festival culminates with the priest breaking a coconut on his head, signifying the victory of good over evil.
