Chennai Airport Shuts Down Operations Amid Cyclone Fengal

Chennai International Airport has temporarily halted all operations due to the severe weather conditions brought by Cyclone Fengal. The suspension, which began at 12:30 PM and is expected to last until 7:00 PM on November 30, 2024, is a precautionary measure in response to the high crosswinds and heavy rainfall. Flights operated by major airlines, including IndiGo Airlines and Air India Express, have been canceled or rerouted to nearby airports such as Bengaluru. Airport authorities have advised passengers to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates and to refrain from non-essential travel.

Passengers stranded due to the suspension have been provided with temporary accommodations in nearby hotels by the airport authorities. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA) are collaborating to manage the impact of Cyclone Fengal and ensure the safety of the public. Emergency response teams and volunteers have been deployed to assist with relief efforts and maintain order at the airport and in the surrounding areas.

Cyclone Fengal is projected to make landfall between Karaikal and Mamallapuram, with wind speeds reaching up to 90 kmph. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Chennai and neighboring districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. Residents have been urged to stay indoors and avoid flood-prone low-lying areas. The government is closely monitoring the situation and has assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to protect lives and property.
