Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has endorsed India’s growing diplomatic influence, stating that the country “can play a very important role” in resolving global conflicts. Her remarks came during an interaction with ANI on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session, where peace efforts in Ukraine and Gaza dominated discussions.
Meloni’s statement follows a recent phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Russia–Ukraine war. Modi reiterated India’s support for diplomatic dialogue, while Meloni praised India’s strategic posture and its potential to mediate in complex geopolitical crises.
“I think it can play a very important role,” Meloni said, when asked about India’s role in ending wars.
The two leaders also reviewed progress under the India–Italy Strategic Partnership, which spans defence, investment, counter-terrorism, and space cooperation. They committed to deepening ties through the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–29 and boosting connectivity via the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC).
Meloni further expressed strong support for the early conclusion of the India–EU Free Trade Agreement and voiced confidence in India’s upcoming AI Impact Summit in 2026.
Her remarks come amid heightened tensions between India and the United States over Russian oil imports. President Donald Trump recently accused India and China of “funding the war” through continued purchases, prompting new tariffs on Indian goods. Despite this, Trump later praised Modi’s leadership and thanked him for supporting peace efforts.
As the UNGA’s theme — “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights” — underscores global cooperation, Meloni’s endorsement signals a growing recognition of India’s role as a stabilizing force in international diplomacy.
