A devastating accident on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway claimed five lives and left one critically injured after an overspeeding Mahindra Thar SUV rammed into a divider early Saturday morning.
The incident occurred near the IFFCO Chowk flyover around 3:30 AM, when the vehicle — reportedly traveling at over 120 km/h — lost control and flipped multiple times upon impact. Eyewitnesses say the Thar was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it veered off course.
All six occupants were young men in their twenties, returning from a late-night gathering. Five were declared dead on the spot, while one survivor was rushed to Medanta Hospital with severe head and spinal injuries. Authorities are yet to confirm whether alcohol or substance use was involved.
Police have launched an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby toll booths and traffic cameras. Preliminary reports suggest the driver may have ignored multiple speed warnings posted along the expressway.
The accident has reignited concerns over reckless driving and late-night speeding on urban highways. Gurugram Traffic Police have announced increased patrols and speed checks in high-risk zones, especially during weekend nights.
Family members of the deceased gathered at the Civil Hospital, demanding accountability and stricter enforcement of road safety norms. Civic groups have also called for better lighting and crash barriers along the stretch.
