Surat, Gujarat — India’s ambitious Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project is set to reach a major milestone in 2027 with the launch of its first operational stretch between Surat and Bilimora. The announcement marks a significant step forward in the country’s high-speed rail infrastructure, promising faster connectivity, modern amenities, and a boost to regional development.
The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), which is overseeing the project, confirmed that civil works along the Surat–Bilimora corridor are progressing steadily. This 50-kilometer stretch will serve as the pilot phase of the larger 508-kilometer Mumbai–Ahmedabad route, which is being developed with technical and financial assistance from Japan under the Shinkansen model.
Affordable Ticket Pricing
Contrary to earlier speculation about premium fares, officials have assured that ticket prices will be “reasonable and competitive.” While the exact fare structure is yet to be finalized, sources suggest that pricing will be comparable to AC chair car fares on existing trains like the Shatabdi Express. This approach aims to make high-speed rail accessible to a broader segment of travelers, including daily commuters and business professionals.
Key Highlights of the Project:
1. Speed & Efficiency: Trains will run at speeds up to 320 km/h, reducing travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad from 8 hours to just about 2 hours.
2. Infrastructure: The corridor includes elevated tracks, tunnels, and cutting-edge stations designed for seamless passenger experience.
3. Sustainability: The project incorporates green building norms and energy-efficient systems.
The Surat–Bilimora launch in 2027 is expected to serve as a showcase for India’s entry into high-speed rail, with full corridor completion targeted for 2030. As anticipation builds, the bullet train promises to redefine intercity travel and set new benchmarks in public transport.
