Veteran journalist Rajdeep Sardesai has been at the center of speculation regarding his alleged exit from India Today, following his controversial remarks on Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK). A video surfaced in which Sardesai suggested that India should consider recognizing the Line of Control (LoC) as the international border and ceding PoK to Pakistan, sparking widespread criticism. Many accused him of undermining India’s national security stance, leading to rumors that he had been removed from his position.
However, Sardesai addressed these rumors directly on his News Today program on May 27, 2025, stating that he had not been sacked and reaffirming his commitment to journalism. He mentioned that he had recently turned 60, which is traditionally considered retirement age, but emphasized that newsmen never really retire. India Today’s official social media accounts also continued to promote his broadcasts, further dispelling the speculation. While Sardesai has faced suspensions in the past, including a brief suspension in 2021 for spreading misinformation, no official statement has been issued regarding his termination.
The rumors appear to have originated from unverified social media posts, including a tweet by ABP News journalist Megha Prasad, which hinted at a senior journalist being removed but did not explicitly name Sardesai. Despite the online buzz, there is no confirmed evidence that India Today has taken any action against him. As of now, Sardesai remains a key figure at India Today, continuing his role as a prominent news anchor.
