As part of local cultural observances, the Tamil Nadu government has declared school and college holidays in select districts on July 8, 2025. The districts of Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli will see closures of educational institutions in connection with major temple festivals. These holidays are specific to local traditions and do not apply statewide.
In Tirunelveli, all schools, colleges, and state government offices will remain closed on Tuesday, July 8, in celebration of the Nellaiyappar Gandhimati Amman Temple Chariot Festival. However, students and staff involved in government examinations are required to attend as scheduled. The district administration has clarified that this holiday is not recognized under the Negotiable Instruments Act, so banks will remain open, and government treasuries will operate with minimal staff.
Meanwhile, Thoothukudi observed a holiday on Monday, July 7, for the Thiruchendur Temple Kudamuzhakkai festival. Similar to Tirunelveli, the closure applied to all schools and colleges, but not to those involved in government exams. To compensate for the missed academic day, Saturday, July 19, has been designated as a working day in both districts.
For the rest of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and other districts, there is no holiday on July 8. Educational institutions will function as usual. These localized holidays reflect the state’s effort to honor regional religious traditions while ensuring that essential services and academic responsibilities continue without disruption.
