Deepthi Jeevanji, born on September 27, 2003, in Kalleda village, Warangal district, Telangana, is an Indian para-athlete who has made significant strides in the world of para-sports. Despite facing numerous challenges, including intellectual impairment and financial hardships, Deepthi has risen to become a world record holder and a beacon of inspiration for many.

Personal Life

Deepthi was born to Jeevanji Yadhagiri and Jeevanji Dhanalaxmi, who worked as daily wage laborers. Growing up in a family with limited means, Deepthi faced societal prejudices due to her cognitive impairments. However, her parents’ unwavering support played a crucial role in her journey. They stood by her through thick and thin, ensuring she had the opportunity to pursue her passion for athletics.

Education

Deepthi’s talent was first noticed by her Physical Education Teacher (PET) in Warangal. Recognizing her potential, her coach, Nagpuri Ramesh, who had previously coached renowned sprinter Dutee Chand, encouraged her parents to send her to Hyderabad for professional training. Despite financial constraints, Ramesh ensured that Deepthi received the necessary support, even covering her bus fare to Hyderabad. She was later diagnosed with intellectual impairment at the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities in Secunderabad, which allowed her to compete in para-sports.

Achievements

Deepthi’s journey in athletics has been marked by numerous accolades:

2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games: Deepthi won the gold medal in the Women’s 400m T20 category, setting a new Asian Para record.

2024 World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan: She set a world record in the Women’s 400m T20 category with a time of 55.06 seconds.

2024 Paris Paralympics: Deepthi clinched the bronze medal in the Women’s 400m T20 category, clocking 55.82 seconds.
