Story

Kathanar – The Wild Sorcerer is a period fantasy thriller inspired by Kerala folklore about Kadamattathu Kathanar, a legendary 9th‑century Christian priest believed to possess supernatural powers. Directed by Rojin Thomas and produced by Gokulam Gopalan under Sree Gokulam Movies, the film blends myth, fantasy, and suspense with cutting‑edge virtual production technology. Jayasurya plays the titular sorcerer‑priest, while Anushka Shetty, in her Malayalam debut and 50th film, portrays Nila, an enigmatic character central to the narrative. Prabhu Deva, Vineeth, Harish Uthaman, Nitish Bharadwaj, and others round out the cast. The film was shot over 18 months using advanced VFX techniques in a custom‑built 45,000 sq. ft. studio, making it one of the most technically ambitious Malayalam films ever attempted. Conceived as the first of a two‑part duology, Kathanar aims to redefine the scope of regional cinema by delivering a visually spectacular and emotionally gripping story. With its pan‑India release in multiple languages, the film is expected to attract audiences across the country and internationally, positioning Malayalam cinema on a global stage.
