Amole Gupte

Amole Gupte was born in 1962 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, into a middle-class family; his father worked as a software professional and his mother at the Life Insurance Corporation of India.

He began his career in theatre before transitioning into films, which gave him a strong foundation in storytelling and performance.

Gupte is best known as the creative director and screenwriter of Taare Zameen Par (2007), a film he conceived along with his wife, Deepa Bhatia, who handled research and editing.

He served as the Chairperson of the Children’s Film Society, India from 2012 to 2015, actively promoting children’s cinema during his tenure.

He is also a member of the advisory board of the Kautik International Student Film Festival, supporting young filmmakers.

His directorial debut was Stanley Ka Dabba (2011), which he also wrote and produced, followed by films like Hawa Hawaai (2014), Sniff (2017), and Saina (2021).

As an actor, he has appeared in several films, including Holi (1984), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992), Kaminey (2009), and Phas Gaye Re Obama (2010).

He is also a lyricist and singer, showcasing his multi-talented nature beyond acting and directing.

Amole Gupte is married to Deepa Bhatia, a noted film editor, and their son Partho Gupte starred in Stanley Ka Dabba.

Despite his success in mainstream cinema, he is deeply committed to child activism, often weaving social issues and children’s perspectives into his films.
