Anurag Singh Kashyap, born on 1972-09-10 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, is an acclaimed Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, and actor. He studied Zoology at Hansraj College, Delhi University before moving into theatre and cinema. His career began as a co-writer for Satya (1998), which earned him recognition in the industry. He made his directorial debut with Paanch (unreleased), but gained prominence with Black Friday (2004), Dev.D (2009), Gulaal (2009), and the cult classic Gangs of Wasseypur (2012). Known for his bold storytelling and realistic style, Kashyap has won multiple Filmfare Awards and international recognition, including being honored as a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government in 2013.

Beyond filmmaking, Kashyap has acted in films like Akira (2016) and I’m Not a Terrorist (2017). He has also produced critically acclaimed films such as Udaan (2010) and The Lunchbox (2013). His work is often associated with India’s independent cinema movement. He was married to Aarti Bajaj (1997–2009) and later to actress Kalki Koechlin (2011–2015). He has one daughter, Aaliya Kashyap, a social media influencer. His brother, Abhinav Kashyap, is also a filmmaker.
