Fali M. Variava worked in the Hindi parallel cinema movement of the 1970s, a period that saw directors like Shyam Benegal redefine Indian filmmaking with socially conscious narratives. Variava was credited as part of the additional crew in films such as Ankur, Nishant, and Bhumika, all of which are considered classics of Indian art-house cinema. His contributions, though behind the scenes, were integral to the production of these films.

He died on 10 July 1977, shortly after the release of Bhumika. While not widely known to the public, his name remains associated with some of the most influential films of Indian cinema’s parallel movement. His work highlights the importance of technical and supporting crew members in shaping the success of films that went on to win national and international acclaim.
