Biography

Perumallu Surapaneni, born in Unguturu, Krishna District, was deeply involved in both cinema and stage arts. From a young age, he excelled in singing and storytelling, which led him to folk performance traditions like Burrakatha. He used these art forms to highlight social issues such as famine, war, corruption, and exploitation, making him a socially conscious performer.

Transitioning into cinema, Perumallu became a respected character actor in Telugu films during the 1950s. His roles in Palletooru, Rojulu Marayi, and Charana Daasi showcased his ability to portray grounded, rural characters with authenticity. He also worked with theatre groups like the Krishna District Praja Natya Mandali, helping revive traditional art forms and connect them with contemporary social struggles. He passed away in 1972, leaving behind a legacy of socially relevant performances.
