Biography

Ranjit Mallick, born on 1944-09-28 in Kolkata, West Bengal, is a legendary Indian actor and producer who predominantly works in Bengali cinema. Known as the “Pratibadi Nayak” (The Rebellious Hero), he has been one of the most successful and respected actors in Bengali film history. He made his debut with Interview (1971), directed by Mrinal Sen, which won him international acclaim at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he has acted in both mainstream and parallel cinema, with memorable films like Guru Dakshina, Shatru, Mouchak, Amader Songs, Sathi, and Nater Guru. He was also honored as the Sheriff of Kolkata in 2014 and received the Banga Bibhushan Award from the Government of West Bengal.

Ranjit Mallick studied at Asutosh College, University of Calcutta, before entering films. His dignified screen presence and gentleman-like image earned him immense popularity across Bengal. He is married to Deepa Mallick, and their daughter Koel Mallick is also a leading actress in Bengali cinema. His son-in-law is producer Nispal Singh. Even today, he remains deeply loved by audiences for his simplicity, powerful dialogue delivery, and versatility.
