Biography

Sagar Ballary was born in 1975 in Mumbai and raised in the suburb of Matunga. He attended St. Joseph’s High School, Wadala, and later graduated in English Literature from Ruia College, Mumbai. His passion for cinema led him to pursue a diploma in Direction & Screenplay Writing at SRFTI, Kolkata (1997–2001). During his final year, he scripted and directed a 34-minute Bengali diploma film Kalu Ravi, which was selected for the national competition at the Mumbai International Film Festival in 2003.

Ballary’s breakthrough came with Bheja Fry (2007), a situational comedy that became a sleeper hit and established him as a distinctive voice in Bollywood. He followed it up with Bheja Fry 2 (2011), Kaccha Limboo (2011), and Hum Tum Shabana (2011). In 2014, he directed the Marathi film Bhatukli. Known for his satirical take on middle-class absurdities, Ballary’s films blend humor with social commentary, making him one of the notable comedy filmmakers in India.
