Shabana Azmi was born on September 18, 1950, into a prominent literary and artistic family. Her father, Kaifi Azmi, was a celebrated Urdu poet and lyricist, while her mother, Shaukat Kaifi, was a respected theatre actress. Growing up surrounded by literature, theatre and cinema strongly influenced her artistic journey.
After studying psychology at St. Xavier's College in Mumbai, Shabana trained at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. She made her film debut with Shyam Benegal's Ankur in 1974. Her performance earned widespread critical acclaim and established her as an important figure in India's parallel cinema movement.
Over the following decades, Azmi delivered acclaimed performances in films such as Arth, Masoom, Mandi, Fire, Godmother, Paar and Water. Her ability to portray complex and emotionally layered characters has earned her multiple National Film Awards and numerous other honours.
Beyond cinema, Shabana Azmi has been actively involved in social causes, particularly women's rights, child welfare, communal harmony and housing issues. She also served as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha.
She married renowned lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar in 1984. The couple has remained one of India's best-known creative partnerships. Shabana Azmi continues to work in films, theatre and international productions, maintaining a significant presence in Indian and global entertainment.
