Vinaya Prasad is a veteran Indian actress who has made a lasting contribution to Kannada and Malayalam cinema. Born in Udupi, Karnataka, she grew up in a culturally active family. Her father, S. Krishna Bhat, worked as a divisional officer with LIC, while her mother, Vatsala, was a school teacher. Vinaya has credited her parents and childhood environment for developing her interest in reading, music and the performing arts.
She completed her schooling at St. Cecily's Convent in Udupi and graduated in Commerce from Poornaprajna College. During college, she became interested in theatre and participated in stage activities. Her film career began with a small role in G. V. Iyer's Madhwacharya. She subsequently received her breakthrough as the leading lady opposite Anant Nag in Ganeshana Maduve (1990), which became a major commercial success.
Vinaya went on to become a leading actress in Kannada cinema, appearing in films such as Gauri Ganesha, Neenu Nakkare Haalu Sakkare and Mysore Jaana. She also established herself in Malayalam cinema with Perumthachan and became especially memorable as Sridevi in the classic Manichitrathazhu.
Her television career further expanded her popularity, particularly in Kerala through the Malayalam serial Sthree. She later transitioned successfully into mature character roles and continues to appear in films and television projects.
