Biography
Annapoorna, born Umamaheswari on August 23, 1954 in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, is a veteran Indian actress best known for her extensive work in Telugu cinema, where she has appeared in over 900 films since the 1970s. She is widely recognized for her portrayals of mother, grandmother, and other strong family-oriented roles, earning her immense respect and affection from audiences across generations.
Annapoorna began her career with the blockbuster Swargam Narakam (1975), directed by Dasari Narayana Rao, where she starred alongside Mohan Babu. Initially credited as “Uma,” her name was changed to Annapoorna by lyricist C. Narayana Reddy, which soon became her screen identity. Over the decades, she became a staple presence in Telugu films, often cast in pivotal supporting roles that added emotional depth to family dramas. Her versatility allowed her to work alongside leading stars of different eras, including Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, Nagarjuna, and Venkatesh, appearing in classics such as Samsaram Oka Chadarangam, Muthyamantha Muddu, Assembly Rowdy, and Khaidi No. 786.
Beyond Telugu cinema, Annapoorna also acted in Tamil films like Nadodi Pattukkaran and Varavu Nalla Uravu, further showcasing her adaptability across languages. Her dedication and natural ability to embody maternal warmth earned her three prestigious Nandi Awards, solidifying her legacy as one of the most respected supporting actresses in South Indian cinema.
