Biography
Nandamuri Balakrishna, popularly known as Balayya or NBK, was born on June 10, 1960, in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu. He is the son of legendary actor and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR). Growing up in a family deeply rooted in cinema and politics, Balakrishna developed a passion for acting from a young age. He pursued his education at Nizam College, Hyderabad, before stepping into the film industry.
Balakrishna made his debut as a child artist in Tatamma Kala (1974) and later transitioned into lead roles. Over the years, he has starred in more than 100 films, earning a reputation for his powerful dialogue delivery and intense action sequences. Some of his most notable films include Samarasimha Reddy (1999), Narasimha Naidu (2001), Legend (2014), Akhanda (2021), and Bhagavanth Kesari (2023). His performances in historical and mythological films have been widely appreciated, with roles such as Lord Rama in Sri Rama Rajyam (2011) and Gautamiputra Satakarni in Gautamiputra Satakarni (2017).
Balakrishna has received several accolades, including three Nandi Awards, three SIIMA Awards, and an IIFA Award. In 2025, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, for his contributions to cinema.
Apart from his film career, Balakrishna is an active politician affiliated with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Since 2014, he has served as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Hindupur constituency in Andhra Pradesh. He has been a strong advocate for development initiatives in his region and has actively campaigned for his party.
Balakrishna is also known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in the healthcare sector. He serves as the Chairman of Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute, a facility established in memory of his mother, Basavatarakam Nandamuri. His contributions to cancer treatment and patient welfare have been widely recognized.
Balakrishna continues to be a dominant force in Telugu cinema, with upcoming projects like Akhanda 2 and Daaku Maharaaj (2025). His ability to balance acting, politics, and philanthropy makes him one of the most influential figures in South India. Whether on-screen or in public service, Balakrishna remains a beloved icon, admired for his dedication and larger-than-life persona.
