Ranna, born Abhishek Rao on October 15, 1989, in Bengaluru, Karnataka, is a rising star in the Kannada film industry known for his work as an actor, writer, and director. With a background far from the glitz of mainstream cinema, Ranna’s journey is rooted in creativity, resilience, and a passion for storytelling.
Raised in a family where his mother Shakunthala ran a dairy and boutique, and his father Krishna Kumar was a student leader and agriculturist, Ranna’s early life was grounded in simplicity. He began his career in advertising, selling ad spots, before transitioning into film production. In 2011, he founded Black Linus Studios International LLP, a production house aimed at exploring all facets of filmmaking.
Ranna’s creative journey began with poetry and stage plays. His first play was written in 2010 and staged in 2016. He made his mark in indie cinema with films like Indian Laundry (2017) and Nalku Kallaru Ondhu Apaharana (2017), where he not only acted but also wrote and directed. These low-budget, high-concept films showcased his flair for experimental storytelling and earned him recognition in the Kannada indie circuit.
His screen name “Ranna” was affectionately given by his mother and sister, symbolizing his personal and artistic identity. Standing at 5'11", Ranna brings a grounded yet intense presence to his roles, often portraying layered, unconventional characters.
