Biography

Sadhu Kokila, born Sahaya Sheelan Shadrach on March 24, 1966, in Bangalore, Karnataka, is a multi-talented force in Kannada cinema. Renowned as an actor, music composer, director, producer, and comedian, he is celebrated for his impeccable comic timing and versatility across genres. Fondly nicknamed “Kokila” for his musical prowess, he began his career as a keyboardist and was introduced to the film industry by musician Kasturi Shankar.

Coming from a musically gifted family—his father was a violinist with the Karnataka Police Department and his mother and sister were playback singers—Sadhu Kokila’s artistic roots run deep. He studied at St. Joseph’s Indian High School and initially pursued music before transitioning to acting. His debut as a composer came with Shhh! (1993), directed by Upendra, who also gave him his now-iconic stage name.

Over the years, Sadhu Kokila has acted in over 390 films, often in comedic or supporting roles, with standout performances in Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari, Googly, Victory, and Yaare Koogadali. As a director, he’s helmed films like Raktha Kanneeru and Rakshasa, and has twice won the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Music Director.

Off-screen, he is married to Saleena since 1993 and has two sons—Suraag, a music director, and Srujan, a classical singer and pianist. Known for his humility and dedication, Sadhu Kokila is also one of India’s fastest keyboard players and continues to be a beloved figure in Sandalwood.

His ability to juggle multiple creative roles while staying grounded makes him a rare gem in Indian cinema. Whether through laughter, melody, or storytelling, Sadhu Kokila’s legacy continues to entertain and inspire generations.
