Surya Vijay Sethupathi

Biography

Surya Vijay Sethupathi, son of acclaimed Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi, is making waves with his debut as a lead actor in the 2025 sports action drama Phoenix. Born in 2005, Surya has grown up around cinema, but he’s determined to carve his own path rather than ride on his father’s legacy.

Before stepping into the spotlight, Surya underwent a remarkable transformation. He shed over 40 kilograms in 1.5 years, trained in MMA, and embraced a rigorous fitness regime to prepare for his role in Phoenix, where he plays a young wrestler navigating a world of power and oppression. Directed by stunt master Anl Arasu, the film also stars Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and Devadarshini, and is backed by AK Braveman Pictures.

Though Phoenix marks his first lead role, Surya is no stranger to the screen. He previously appeared as a child artist in Naanum Rowdy Dhaan (2015) and Sindhubaadh (2019), and had cameo roles in Viduthalai Parts 1 and 2. Despite being labeled a “nepo kid,” Surya has openly addressed the criticism, stating that passion and hard work—not lineage—should define an actor’s journey4.

His father named him “Surya” in memory of a childhood friend who passed away, a gesture that reflects the emotional depth of their bond. At the premiere of Phoenix, Vijay Sethupathi was visibly emotional, embracing his son with pride—a moment that resonated deeply with fans.

With his grounded personality, dedication to the craft, and a powerful debut, Surya Vijay Sethupathi is poised to be more than just a star kid—he’s a rising talent in Tamil cinema with a story of grit and growth that’s just beginning.
