Biography

Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (1923 - 1996), also known as NTR, was an Indian actor, director, politician, and government official. He was born in Nimmakuru, Andhra Pradesh, and began his career as a stage artist before transitioning into cinema. His breakthrough role came in the 1957 film Maya Bazaar, where he played Lord Krishna. He went on to star in many other blockbuster films, including Pathala Bhairavi (1951), Missamma (1955), and Gundamma Katha (1962). NTR is considered one of the most influential actors and filmmakers in the history of Indian cinema. 

NTR served three terms as chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, from 1983–84, 1984–89, and 1994–95. He founded the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982, and was an avid advocate of Telugu Pride. He led many reforms, including establishing the Mandal system, Temples Administration, empowerment to local bodies, and the establishment of Women University, Telugu University, Health University, and Open University. 

NTR died of a heart attack in Hyderabad in 1996, less than six months after being ousted from power by an internal party coup in 1995. He is survived by six sons and three daughters, including actor Nandamuri Balakrishna.
