Aamir Khan Faces Religious Objections Over Marriage to Gauri Spratt After Cleric Issues Fatwa

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has become the center of a religious controversy after a Muslim cleric issued a public fatwa objecting to his recent marriage to Gauri Spratt. The development has sparked debate on social media, with discussions focusing on religious interpretations, personal choice, and interfaith marriages.

According to reports, Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, objected to Aamir Khan's third marriage, stating that, under his interpretation of Islamic law (Sharia), a Muslim man should not marry a non-Muslim woman unless she embraces the faith. The cleric described such a marriage as impermissible under his understanding of Islamic teachings and said he had issued a public fatwa to clarify his religious opinion.

Explaining his position, the Mufti reportedly said that the fatwa was intended to present his interpretation of the Quran and to prevent what he believes could be misconceptions about Islamic law. He also expressed concern that public figures' actions could influence perceptions of the religion.

Aamir Khan and Gauri Spratt tied the knot in a private ceremony at the actor's Mumbai residence on July 5, attended by close family members and friends. The actor had earlier confirmed the marriage, describing it as a simple and intimate celebration rather than a grand public event.

Before the wedding, Aamir had spoken openly about how meeting Gauri changed his outlook on marriage. After previously suggesting that he did not see himself marrying again, the actor later said that his relationship with Gauri had transformed his perspective.

The issuance of a fatwa represents a religious opinion from a particular scholar or institution and does not, by itself, have legal force under Indian law. The controversy has nevertheless generated widespread discussion online, with supporters emphasizing the couple's personal choice while others have debated the cleric's interpretation of religious principles.

Neither Aamir Khan nor Gauri Spratt has publicly responded to the reported fatwa at the time of writing. The actor has generally maintained that his personal life is a private matter, despite public interest in his relationships.

As the discussion continues, the incident has once again highlighted the intersection of celebrity, religion, and personal freedom in India, where the private lives of public figures often become subjects of national conversation.
