Harry Potter star Emma Watson has opened up about the awkwardness of filming romantic scenes with her longtime co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, recalling that repeated takes eventually made the experience feel surprisingly routine.
Watson, who played Hermione Granger throughout the Harry Potter franchise, shared that filming intimate scenes with actors she had known since childhood was particularly challenging. The cast grew up together while making the eight-film series, making it difficult to completely separate their long personal history from their on-screen relationships.
Emma Watson on Kissing Daniel Radcliffe
Watson's most notable romantic scene with Daniel Radcliffe came in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, when Hermione kisses Harry during a vision involving Ron.
Describing the sequence, Watson recalled that the scene had to appear passionate because it represented Ron Weasley's worst possible imagination. She also remembered that the circumstances of filming made the scene particularly awkward.
According to Watson, she and Radcliffe had to repeat the scene several times to get the required performance. After approximately four or five takes, however, the experience became much less unusual.
“Once you've done it four or five times, kissing gets quite boring,” Watson said, explaining that the repeated filming eventually made the process easier.
Kissing Rupert Grint Was Also Awkward
Watson also discussed her kiss with Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley. The moment was significant because Hermione and Ron's relationship had developed throughout the franchise, eventually leading to their romantic storyline.
The actress recalled that filming the scene was uncomfortable partly because the cast had to deal with difficult physical conditions on set. She said they had been drenched with a large amount of water shortly before filming and had to continue performing as though they did not know it was coming.
The unusual circumstances added another layer of awkwardness to a scene involving two actors who had spent years working together.
Growing Up Together Made the Scenes Difficult
One of the biggest challenges for Watson was the fact that Radcliffe and Grint were not simply co-stars. The three actors had spent much of their childhood and teenage years together while filming the hugely successful franchise.
Watson acknowledged that their personal history made it difficult to completely put their friendship aside when filming romantic scenes.
Nevertheless, repeated takes eventually helped the actors become more comfortable with the process. What initially felt awkward became more technical and routine as filming continued.
A Memorable Part of the Harry Potter Franchise
The romantic moments involving Hermione, Harry and Ron became some of the most memorable scenes in the final Harry Potter films. Hermione and Ron eventually became a couple, while Harry's relationship with Ginny Weasley developed separately.
Watson's comments offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the challenges faced by young actors who spent years growing up together before being asked to portray romantic relationships on screen.
Her experience also highlights how filmmaking can make even emotionally significant scenes feel surprisingly ordinary after multiple rehearsals and takes.
