Legendary Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, best known for providing the iconic voice of Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise and Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, has died at the age of 85. Cullen died on August 26 at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family. His cause of death has not been disclosed.
Cullen's family confirmed his death in a statement, describing his passing as peaceful and asking fans to honour his legacy through compassion, integrity and loyalty.
Peter Cullen and Optimus Prime
Cullen's most celebrated role was Optimus Prime, the noble leader of the Autobots. He first voiced the character in the original Transformers animated series in 1984.
His deep, commanding voice became inseparable from Optimus Prime and helped establish the character as one of the most recognisable figures in animated pop culture. Cullen later reprised the role in The Transformers: The Movie (1986), video games, animated projects and Michael Bay's live-action Transformers films beginning in 2007. His final theatrical appearance as Optimus Prime came in 2023's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Interestingly, Cullen's interpretation of Optimus Prime was inspired by his older brother Larry, a US Marine and Vietnam veteran. Cullen used his brother's calm strength and sense of heroism as inspiration for the character's distinctive voice and personality.
He Was Also the Voice of Eeyore
For another generation of audiences, Cullen was equally memorable as Eeyore, the gloomy but lovable donkey from Winnie the Pooh.
He voiced Eeyore in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh beginning in the late 1980s and continued playing the character across several subsequent Disney productions. Cullen once described Eeyore as one of his favourite roles because of the strong emotional response he received from children.
A Career Beyond Transformers
Cullen's career extended far beyond Optimus Prime and Eeyore. He voiced K.A.R.R. in Knight Rider, appeared in The Smurfs, G.I. Joe and Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, and provided the distinctive vocal effects for the Predator creature in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film. He also voiced King Kong in the 1976 film.
Over a career spanning decades, Cullen accumulated more than 200 acting credits. He received a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011 and was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Children's & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.
Peter Cullen is survived by his four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay. His distinctive voice and unforgettable characters have left a lasting mark on generations of animation and film fans.
