Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots (2009), directed by Rajkumar Hirani, remains one of the most iconic Indian films ever made. While most viewers remember its emotional storytelling, comedy, and strong social message about the education system, there are several lesser-known behind-the-scenes facts and casting stories that many fans are unaware of.
One of the early casting rumors linked Anushka Sharma to the role of Pia. Although an audition video circulated online, it was actually from another project (Munnabhai M.B.B.S. related discussions), and she was never officially cast. Similarly, actress Kajol was reportedly considered for a role or cameo in the film but eventually turned it down due to other commitments.
Aamir Khan’s personal casting trivia also became a talking point among fans. He is known for playing the role of a college student in the film, despite being only a few years younger than Boman Irani, who played the strict professor “Virus.” Interestingly, in real life, Aamir is just about five years younger than Boman Irani, making their on-screen student-teacher dynamic quite unusual when viewed from a real-world perspective.
Another surprising age-related fact involves Ali Fazal, who played Joy Lobo in the film. Although his character appears to be senior to Aamir Khan’s character in the storyline, in real life Ali Fazal is nearly 23 years younger than Aamir Khan, highlighting the magic of casting and storytelling in cinema.
The famous pregnancy scene in 3 Idiots was not originally created for this film. It was initially conceptualized for Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., another Rajkumar Hirani project, but was later adapted and refined for 3 Idiots.
There are also interesting anecdotes involving other Bollywood stars. Shah Rukh Khan, who starred in My Name Is Khan, once humorously referred to himself as the “fourth idiot” for not being part of such a landmark film. Kareena Kapoor reportedly expressed strong interest in working with Rajkumar Hirani and personally approached him for the role of Pia, which she eventually bagged.
Boman Irani initially hesitated to play the role of Professor Virus. He even suggested Irrfan Khan’s name for the character before finally agreeing to take on the role himself. His performance later became one of the most memorable aspects of the film.
The song “Zoobi Doobi” is considered a subtle tribute to Raj Kapoor, especially inspired by the classic song “Pyar Hua Iqraar Hua” from Shree 420. Additionally, Rajkumar Hirani revealed that the original casting idea once included Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and John Abraham.
Another interesting fact is that Aamir Khan and Javed Jaffrey do not share any scenes together in the film, despite having worked together earlier in the 1990 film Jawaani Zindabad.
