Veteran South Indian actress Sowcar Janaki, one of the most respected performers in Indian cinema, passed away in Chennai on Friday, August 21, 2026, at the age of 94. She died at around 1:59 PM after being hospitalised and receiving intensive medical care for age-related health complications. The news was confirmed by Nadigar Sangam president and actor Nassar.

Janaki's death marks the end of an extraordinary career spanning more than seven decades. She worked extensively across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema, appearing in more than 400 films during her long career. Her versatility allowed her to portray heroines, mothers and memorable character roles across several generations of Indian cinema.

Born as Sankaramanchi Janaki, she entered the film industry with the Telugu film Shavukaru in 1950. The success and popularity of the film led to her being popularly known as Sowcar Janaki. She subsequently established herself as a leading actress and worked with several of the biggest stars and filmmakers of the South Indian film industries.

Her Tamil film career included memorable movies such as Puthiya Paravai, Iru Kodugal, Neerkumizhi, Uyarndha Manithan, Edhir Neechal and Thillu Mullu. She also made a significant contribution to Telugu cinema and appeared in several notable Kannada and Malayalam productions. Her performances were widely appreciated for their emotional depth, dialogue delivery and natural acting style.

Sowcar Janaki was also part of the historic 1959 Kannada film Mahishasura Mardini, starring Dr. Rajkumar. Her work across different languages made her one of the early pan-South Indian performers and helped establish a lasting connection between the regional film industries.

Over the years, Janaki received several prestigious honours for her contribution to cinema. She was awarded the Kalaimamani, various state-level film honours and the Padma Shri in 2022, one of India's highest civilian honours. The news of her passing has prompted tributes from the film fraternity and political leaders. Her mortal remains were scheduled to be kept at Teynampet in Chennai from 5 PM on Friday so that fans, friends and members of the film industry could pay their final respects.
