UPSC Civil Services Mains 2026 Live Updates: Exam Begins With Essay Paper
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services (Main) Examination 2026 began on Friday, August 21, with the Essay paper, marking the start of one of India's most competitive examinations. According to the official UPSC timetable, the Essay paper was scheduled in the forenoon session from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon on August 21.
The UPSC Mains examination is being conducted across five examination days on August 21, 22, 23, 29 and 30. After the Essay paper on the opening day, candidates will appear for General Studies Paper I and Paper II on August 22, followed by General Studies Paper III and Paper IV on August 23. The qualifying Indian Language and English papers are scheduled for August 29, while the two Optional Subject papers will be conducted on August 30.
The Essay paper carries 250 marks and is an important component of the written examination. Unlike the objective-style Prelims, the Mains examination tests candidates on analytical thinking, conceptual clarity, argument-building, awareness of contemporary issues and the ability to present ideas in a structured manner. The official UPSC notification states that the written examination consists of nine conventional essay-type papers, with two papers qualifying in nature.
As candidates entered examination centres across the country, attention remained focused on reporting requirements and examination-day instructions. The morning session is scheduled from 9 AM to noon, while papers on days with two sittings are conducted in the afternoon from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Candidates have been advised to carefully check their e-Admit Cards and follow the instructions issued by the Commission.
The UPSC CSE Mains 2026 is a crucial stage for candidates who cleared the Preliminary Examination. Marks obtained in the ranking papers of the written examination, along with marks secured in the Personality Test, contribute to the final merit ranking. The examination ultimately determines selection for various services, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and other central services.
With the Essay paper now underway, candidates and aspirants are closely watching the questions, difficulty level and emerging reactions. Detailed analysis of the paper, candidate feedback and topic-wise discussions are expected to follow after the examination concludes.
